Evangelion: Quick Thoughts and Expectations

Posted by

Welcome, weebs and authors alike, to The Aniwriter.

As many of you might already be aware, it was announced last month by Netflix that one of the most iconic and critically acclaimed anime of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion, will be coming to the service in spring of 2019. Because of the show’s critical acclaim, and also because of its hard acquire status as a show that is already over 20 years old, many are extremely excited about its release, and I would have to say that I understand their excitement.

As someone who has never seen the show, and has never really had the opportunity to watch it aside from potentially paying 90 dollars for a box set, it makes me happy to see that the Evangelion is going to be available on a streaming service that I already use.

What Will Come Out of This?

Despite having not seen it, even I know that the show changed the course of anime, and is the reason why shows can be as dark and gruesome as Goblin Slayer. Evangelion being on Netflix will give people a kind of blast from the past and will allow them to see the piece of anime history, and along with the live-action cowboy bebop that is also supposedly coming out, will bring more exposure to anime in general.

My Expectations

Based on what I do know about Evangelion, I think I’m going to like it a lot. Generally speaking, I don’t much care for the mecha genre, aside from a few notable exceptions such as Gurenn Lagaan. However, Evangelion is a series that, because of its history, seems like it will be a genuinely unique experience. I have watched some of the rebuild movies, but getting to experience the original is something I am very much excited for.

Have any of you guys seen Evangelion? If so, without spoiling it, how do you feel about it as a whole? Also, if you want to support the Aniwriter through donations or are just feeling generous, consider buying me a coffee on Ko-Fi. Otherwise, thanks for reading and bye for now, Friendos!

  1. I’m excited. I own the DVD’s but I know that this is going to get discussion going anew on an anime that never really leaves the community’s consciousness.
Also, it means I really do need to get out that review of Evangelion that I’ve been thinking about since starting the blog. It is one of those anime that makes itself very hard to write a review for.

  2. I think you’ll like it. I’m going to rewatch it as soon as it’s available.

That ending, though… I think I could make a case that the phrase “thought provoking” was designed with that ending in mind!
